Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister for State for Energy Affairs, and Robert Habeck, Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, signed a joint declaration of intent today to further promote cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector.

It is anticipated that such a partnership will further diversify Germany’s energy supply through LNG imports from Qatar, as well as facilitate bilateral cooperation in hydrogen and renewable energy. Additionally, both countries will benefit from intensified knowledge exchange on topics related to the energy transition, from the expansion of renewable energies to energy efficiency and demand-side management.

A number of important energy-related issues, including the potential for increased cooperation, were covered in the signed agreement. It is the culmination of the continuous dialogue between the two countries. During the transition to carbon neutrality, Germany wants to diversify its gas supply with liquefied natural gas (LNG) to foster energy security.

Qatar and Germany have forged an energy partnership that supports high-level meetings between governments to discuss energy issues. As part of the energy partnership, both sides are developing a roadmap defining the structure and actions of the collaboration, which will include the establishment of two working groups. One will provide a forum for discussion regarding infrastructure and regulatory matters as well as support the development of LNG and hydrogen trade relations between Qatar and Germany. The other will be responsible for energy efficiency and demand-side management, concentrating on boosting renewable energy capacities with specific attention to issues, such as electricity markets and infrastructure, as well as facilitating bilateral dialogue.

Partnerships and dialogues in the energy sector have proven to be excellent platforms for bilateral cooperation. In the Gulf region, Germany has forged a number of strong partnerships. As the latest link in a successful network aimed at furthering the global energy transition, Qatar and Germany’s new Energy Partnership is designed to further advance the global energy transition.
